Do you know that the English name of Singapore is derived from the Malay word Singapura (Lion City)? Legend has it that Sang Nila Utama, a Srivijayan prince who founded and named Singapore, chanced upon a fine-looking beast when he landed on Singapore. He asked his Chief Minister what animal it was, and was told that it was probably a lion. Believing that it was a good omen, Sang Nila Utama thus named his new found kingdom, “Singapura”.
