Session Description | Atmospheric, oceanic and hydrologic processes are the key drivers of earth system processes. Earth system state and flux observational data are available from both in-situ and remote sensing observing systems, but these data are limited in both space and time. By incorporating such observations into earth system models through data assimilation methods, the most accurate (optimal) estimates of earth system states and fluxes may be obtained. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of earth system modeling and prediction, it is important to understand the recent modeling and data assimilation progress in these major disciplines of geosciences. Topics for the session include but are not limited to: 1) assimilation techniques and theories; 2) treatment of nonlinear and discontinuous processes; 3) assimilation of in-situ and/or remotely-sensed observational data; 4) sensitivity analysis and its application to adaptive (targeting) observation; and 5) predictability and ensemble prediction studies relevant to data assimilation. Especially this session is in honor of Prof. Yoshi K. Sasaki, Emeritus Professor of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, who pioneered in applying the variational technique to data assimilation of geoscience problems. |
