| Session Description | Dependence on groundwater in the economic, social and cultural development of a country is growing as the quality and the quantity of surface water have degraded. Consequently, groundwater is being over exploited beyond sustainable development stages in many countries. However, due to relatively slower, compared to those of surface water, responses of groundwater systems to both anthropogenic and natural stresses, over exploitation tends to continue until severe damages occur. To protect the groundwater systems for both environment and mankind groundwater systems need better management. Quality and quantity of groundwater, and the integrity of the hosting geologic formation must meet pre-specified criteria. Viable management strategies can be developed only when groundwater hydrology is well understood. In this session we attempt to address both hydrology and management of groundwater systems. Abstracts are solicited on all aspects of groundwater hydrology and management including, but not limited to: unsaturated and saturated flows, heterogeneities and characterization, geophysics and geochemistry, uncertainty, modeling, recharge and discharge, saltwater intrusion, laboratory and field studies for hydrology, and for management risk assessment, optimization, monitoring, case studies and other relevant topics. |
