Session Title | Natural hazards and catastrophic environmental changes |
Main Convener | Dr. Anne Mueller (Brisbane, Australia, Germany) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Watcharaporn Keankeo (Burapha University, Thailand) |
Session Description | This session explores natural catastrophic impacts that affect people and ecosystems in the Asia-Oceania region. We encourage submissions of paleo- and modern studies on rapid and catastrophic environmental changes and natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, hurricanes, meteorites, droughts and floods. The session also invites papers dealing with recovery, either to a new, more resilient status or a return to the previous situation. The analysis of past archives (such as sediment, historical documents, archaeological remains) can give the total overview of the consequences of catastrophic events, physical, biotic and social. In our session, we seek a multidisciplinary approach in order to create more comprehensive and better understood palaeo-reconstructions. We hope to attract, for example, geologists, geographers, oceanographers and meteorologists dealing with natural hazards. As robust chronologies from different archives are essential to be able to establish cause and effect, we welcome papers dealing with high temporal resolution and robustly calibrated dating. Papers dealing with improving our preparedness to natural hazards are also invited. |
