Session Title Energy transfer processes in the magnetotail
Main Convener Dr. Ayako Matsuoka (ISAS/JAXA, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Wolfgang Baumjohann (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Austria)
Session Description Many kinds of energy transfer mechanism have been found in the Earth's magnetotail, such as reconnection, wave-particle interaction, instabilities, etc. These are often seen associated with explosive magnetospheric phenomena, e.g., substorms, storms, dipolarizations, and plasmoids. Understanding such mechanisms is crucial to properly describe the major energy propagation from the solar wind to various regions in the magnetosphere, and determine their cause-effect relationship. This session addresses satellite (Geotail, Cluster, Double Star, Themis, etc.) and ground-based observations, numerical simulations and theories on energy transfer processes in the Earth's magnetotail. Discussions on future satellite missions for better understanding are also welcome.
