Session Description In recent years, studies of data from equatorial and low-latitude magnetic observatories, satellite observations, and remote sensing of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere-thermosphere using ionosondes, radars, GPS, scintillation and airglow techniques, have shown a multitude of effects at these latitudes in different longitude zones, caused by superstorms. Some effects are due to the prompt penetration of magnetospheric electric fields to the low-latitude ionosphere, while others are due to the setting up of disturbance dynamos by altered thermospheric winds. An important aspect of these equatorial and low-latitude phenomena is the difference between the dayside and nightside responses to superstorms. In this session, we welcome talks on any of these or related topics. Papers dealing with magnetic storms of any intensity are welcome, as these allow comparisons with effects of superstorms.
