Session Description | This session of talks and posters will explore the geology of tsunamis and tsunami-hazard assessment around the Indian Ocean. Does the 2004 catastrophe have Holocene predecessors? If so, how often did they occur and did they share the same source area? Given that documentary records of pre-2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquakes understated the area’s tsunami-generating potential, can geologic records of ancient earthquakes and tsunamis help avert surprises from tsunami sources elsewhere on the Indian Ocean rim? On stormy coasts such as India’s, can the geologic records of tsunamis be distinguished from those of cyclones? What guidance can be obtained from modern examples, such as the deposits of the 1883 Krakatau, 2004 Indian Ocean, and 2006 West Java tsunamis? Do geologic traces of tsunamis survive in the soils of mangroves and rice paddies? |
