Session Description | Many countries in Asia have long historic tradition of culture and have been suffering earthquake disasters, hence many earthquake documents have been conserved. Historical earthquake studies such as collection of historical earthquake data from archives, establishment of seismic intensity scales, compilation of historical earthquake catalogues, have done in Asian countries for many years. For older paleo-earthquakes, geological methods such as trenching surveys on active faults, identifications of liquefaction features at archaeological sites or tsunami deposits in coastal environments, have been carried out in some countries. These studies in historical seismology and paleoseismology not only clarify the recurrence characteristics of earthquakes but also are used for long- and mid-term earthquake prediction, including probabilistic earthquake forecast. |
