Section AS - Atmospheric Sciences
Session Title Atmospheric Waves and Winds Including Coupling Between Lower and Middle Atmosphere
Main Convener Dr. S. K. Dhaka (University of Delhi, India)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Hye-Yeong Chun (Yonsei University, Korea, South)
Dr. Y. Shibagaki (Osaka Electro Communication University, Japan)
Session Description Advent of technology has made it possible to monitor the atmosphere at a very high temporal and spatial resolution. Wind fluctuations are easy to monitor using VHF and UHF radars with time resolution of a few minutes and height resolutions of several tens of meters. Atmospheric waves including gravity waves are very important to study as they play a significant role in terms of energy and momentum transfer to the upper atmosphere after their generation in the lower atmosphere. On the other hand, continuous effort by the theoretical groups along with simulation studies has helped a lot to understand the mechanisms of generation of equatorial waves/gravity waves and tides and their vertical interaction/ propagation. There is a need to discuss the results by the large scientific community at one platform, which AOGS certainly will provide in this Asian region.
