Session Title The growth history and active tectonics of the Asian continents: multidisciplinary approach
Main Convener Dr. Xixi Zhao (University of California Santa Cruz, United States)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Vijay Kumar Rao (National Geophysical Research Institute, India)
Prof. Victor Mocanu (University of Bucharest, Romania)
Dr. Randell Stephenson (VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Session Description Asia was formed through the amalgamation and accretion of numerous continental blocks/terranes following closure of successive Tethyan ocean basins. The northward convergence of India with Asia has produced the Tibetan Plateau, one of the most spectacular geologic features on Earth. This session welcomes all papers relating to the origin and evolution history of Asian continental blocks (including the Himalaya), continent-ocean configurations during different stages of continental amalgamation, paleomagnetic constraints of both ancient tectonics and current deformation, paleomagnetic exploration of tectonic driving forces in the mantle, the growth history of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya, and the timing and effects of Tibetan uplift on global climate.

This session will be multidisciplinary, including papers on paleomagnetism, tectonostratigraphy, biogeography, geochronology, structural analysis, geodynamics, paleogeography, and paleoclimate. The papers sought for this session are not limited in these topics. Oral talks and poster presentations are welcome to report on present investigations and future challenges on all aspects of geodynamics and paleomagnetism of Asia, with a focus on research carried out in the Asia-Oceania region.
