Session Title Metamorphism and Tectonics of HP-UHP terranes in northern Tibet and Himalaya
Main Convener Prof. Juhn Liou (Stanford University, United States)
Co-convener(s) Dr. S.G. Song (Peking Univ., China)
Prof. L.F. Zhang (Peking Univ., China)
Prof. Shige Maruyama (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan)
Prof. Chang Whan Oh (Chonbuk National Univ., Korea, South)
Prof. Ching-Hua Lo (National Taiwan University, Taiwan)
Session Description Both Pacific- and Alpine-type subduction-collision played an important role in the formation of the Eurasian continent; the Himalayan of southern Tibet is one of the best active examples. Northern Tibet has a similar tectonic setting, and records Caledonian subduction of the Tethys ocean in the Qilian Mountains and continental subduction-collision in the Qaidam Mountains; these are the target areas of field trips for the International Eclogite Conference in Western China in June-July, 2009. This Special session invites petrochemists and geochronologists to present their data to illustrate the difference of oceanic and continental subduction in both Tibet and Himalaya.
