Session Description | Research in Mineral Science nowadays relies on advanced techniques that allow geoscientists in different fields to explore and evaluate new opportunities for mineral raw materials. The recent growth of interest in nanotechnology calls upon information from Mineral Science relating to space and planetary science research as well as crystal growth and understanding the origin and significance of inclusions and exsolution phases on the nanoscale properties of minerals. Additionally, new developments in microbiology enhance our ability to exploit specific minerals, for example through beneficiation or controlled crystallisation. This Forum encourages geoscientists to present new evidence and results concerning recent developments in the use of minerals as raw materials. Mineral resources provide the basis for the economic development of the Asia-Oceana region, as raw materials for domestic industry as well as for export. The session will consider progress in exploration and evaluation of mineral resources, for both metallic and non-metallic (i.e. industrial) minerals as well as gem mineral properties and their deposits. This will be the venue for mineral scientists to meet with partners from academic, governmental and industrial sectors. |
