Session Title Biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics of the Asia-Pacific marginal seas
Main Convener Dr. Hongbin Liu (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Jun Nishioka (Hokkaido University, Japan)
Dr. Kon-Kee Liu (National Central University, Taiwan)
Prof. Minhan Dai (Xiamen University, China)
Session Description Marginal seas are among the most biologically and geochemically active areas of the world oceans. They play an important role in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nutrients and trace-metals because they receive large fluxes of these elements through upwelling, riverine inputs and atmospheric deposits, which in turn support rich and diverse biota in highly variable environments. The marginal seas also exchange large amounts of materials with the open oceans and influence the biological activity and geochemical characteristics of the adjacent oceans. In recent years, oceanographers in the various Asia-Pacific regions have conducted integrative researches in marginal seas from the subarctic to the tropical with special foci on iron biogeochemistry, carbon cycle, primary productivity and microbial food-web dynamics. This session will provide a forum for scientists from different regions to exchange their results in all aspects of marginal sea studies, from air-sea exchange to benthic fluxes, from observations and experiments to modeling and geochemical budgeting, and from the Bering Sea to the South China Sea and beyond. Contrasting and/or comparison between different systems are particularly welcome.
