Section OS - Ocean Sciences
Session Title Ocean data assimilation
Main Convener Dr. Jiang Zhu (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Toshiyuki Awaji (Frontier Research Center for Global Change, Japan)
Dr. Masafumi Kamachi (Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan)
Session Description As the oceanic observation techniques and systems have been developing dramatically in recent years, applications of ocean data assimilation that cover from ENSO prediction, coastal and shelf sea forecast to marine ecological modeling have been spreading in fast paces. At the meantime, researches on assimilation methodology have gained fruitful advances. Advanced methods such as variational and ensemble methods are applied to assimilate various in situ and remote sensing observations. This session will provide a good platform for ocean observers, modelers and assimilators, especially those from Asia and Oceania to exchange and share their experiences in the following topics (not restricted to):
1. Assessing the impacts of various ocean observational systems (e.g., through observing system simulation or sensitivity experiments);
2. Global, regional and coastal applications of ocean data assimilation;
3. Data assimilation for ecosystem modeling;
4. Uncertainty analysis of ocean models;
5. Data assimilation methodology.
