Section OS - Ocean Sciences
Session Title Environmental fluid dynamics in the East China Sea
Main Convener Dr. Jae Hak Lee (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute, Korea, South)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Yang-Ki Cho (Chonnam National University, Korea, South)
Session Description This session responds to increasing recognition of the need to better understand ocean environment in the East China Sea from community of surrounding countries. The East China Sea provides an important pathway of biogeochemical materials such as nutrients and carbon. Recent field and satellite observations have yielded new insights into mixing processes, circulation dynamics and their effect on the material budget and ecosystem productivity in the region. It is timely to discuss recent progress in the related research work. Specific topics of interest include: the behaviour of the Changjiang Diluted Water; upwelling in the continental shelf edge; generation of turbulence through the near-bottom tidal stirring and internal wave activities; interpretation of satellite ocean color images; and dynamics-ecosystem interaction. Results are anticipated from field observation, satellite remote sensing and numerical modeling research.
