Session Description The rapid economic growth in the last decade is the main cause for the changing of coastal land use and expansion of coastal construction. These are increasing coastal water pollution, depletion of mangrove area and coastal resources.
Coastal erosion in Thailand has been concerned as a serious problem in the upper gulf of Thailand, which covers the area of 400 kilometer from Petchaburi, Samutsakorn, Samutsongkham, Bangkok, Samutprakarn, Chachaengsao, Chonburi, and Rayong province. The report of Mineral resources department summarize that the coastal erosion is still severely not only in the upper gulf of Thailand but also in the other coastal zones, especially in the western part of the gulf of Thailand, including Chumporn, Suratthani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani and Narathiwat.
The solution to solve this problem depends on its topography, coastal characteristic and influence of local monsoon. However, the proper coastal zone management and coastal engineering should consider as well as the cooperation between relevant agencies, knowledge and experience of local people in order to make national policy planning for sustainable development.
