Session Description | Climate and human-induced change poses many challenges to the management of river basins in Pacific Rim environments. Spatial and temporal variability in patterns and rates of water and sediment transfer have numerous implications for population and infrastructure located along river valleys. In Pacific Rim steeplands, for example, downstream propogation of sediment pulses may cause riverbed changes leading to flood hazard. Engineering responses have dealt with some of the hazards but may no longer be seen as sustainable in the face of climate and landuse change or in terms of improving ecosystem functioning. Continued development pressure in some river basins generates concern for shifting land to ocean water and nutrient fluxes. This session address different methods and techniques for assessing the sensiitivity of river basins to environmental change and the evolution of management responses. |
