Section HS - Hydrological Sciences
Session Title Radar Hydrology
Main Convener Prof. Eiichi Nakakita (Kyoto University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Alan Seed (Bureau of Meteolorogy, Australia)
Session Description Following to the first radar hydrology session successfully held in the AOGS 2007, which gave us an opportunity to have thematic discussion, "Radar Hydrology" will be proposed in the AOGS 2008 in Busan, again. Contributions are expected on the following topics from both scientific and operational perspectives:

#Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE):
-Single- and multi-parameter radar processing algorithms
-Rain microphysics and radar QPE
-Quality assessment of radar QPE; radar calibration issues
-Merging data from multiple sensors (radar networks, raingauge networks, satellite data)
-Error models for radar QPE; ensemble radar QPE
-Space and time structures of rainfall over a range of scales
-Radar QPE and stochastic rainfall models
-Characterising statistics of rainfall extremes with radar and raingauge data.

#Quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF):
-QPF based on advection of radar data
-Data assimilation of wind and rainfall radar data into meso-scale atmospheric models
-Merging radar QPF with numerical weather predictions; ensemble QPF

#Radar-based distributed hydrologic observation and modelling
-Observation of other hydrologic variables (water vapour, soil moisture, discharge, …) over a range of scales; uncertainties
-Utility of high space-time resolution QPE for studying hydrological processes and responses over a range of scales
-Hydrologic modelling systems; parameter estimation in the gauged and un-gauged basin contexts
-Characterisation and propagation of uncertainties in hydrologic modelling; data assimilation
-Use of QPF in hydrologic prediction
