Session Title GPS meteorology from space-borne occultation and ground-based network
Main Convener Prof. Ching-Yuang Huang (National Central University, Taiwan)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Yuei-An Liou (National Central University, Taiwan)
Prof. Dong-Kyou Lee (Seoul National University, Korea, South)
Dr. Jens Wickert (GFZ Potsdam, Germany)
Session Description Since the FORMOSAT-3 / COSMIC launch in April 2006, many scientific results have been obtained by using the GPS Radio Occultation (RO) data. For exchanging technical and scientific improvements in retrieving and utilizing GPS RO data, international scientists are invited to participate in this workshop with solicitation for valuable demonstrations on the GPS RO impact on meteorological research and weather forecast. Meanwhile, the GPS ground-based observations are being emphasized in many extensive networks with great contributions to real-time monitoring of crust deformation and meteorological research.
The main objectives of this special session are:
• To illustrate/improve current skills of data assimilation on both basic research and application with GPS RO and ground-based data;
• To assess data impact on weather simulation and prediction through assimilation of different GPS RO and ground-based data formats and different retrieval methods for severe weather in Asia;
• To validate/improve retrieval methods/algorithms of atmospheric variables for GPS RO and ground-based data set;
• To explore the benefits of GPS RO and ground-based data on hydrometeorological analysis in application to global / regional climate;
• To provide a forum for the GPS observation plans and programs and the strategy of network to improve meteorological research.
