Session Description Polar sciences are indispensable in the study of global change, since polar regions play an important role in global climate and environmental changes and is a key area for monitoring such changes. The polar regions are extremely sensitive to global change and such change is seen to be amplified in polar regions. The polar ocean, atmosphere and cryosphere are closely-linked to the global climate system with many feedback mechanisms. Polar ecosystem is strongly influenced by global change and the polar regions provide valuable records of the past climate and environmental changes.
The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 is now being conducted with the concept of an international program of coordinated, interdisciplinary scientific research and observations in the polar regions; to explore new scientific frontiers, to deepen our understanding of polar processes and their global linkages, and to increase our ability to detect changes. The meeting will focus on the recent advances in polar sciences especially related to IPY 2007-2008, and the role of polar regions in the global warming. The meeting will provide an opportunity to realize the perspective of Asian Forum for Polar Sciences (AFoPS) which was organized to proceed an international cooperation in polar sciences within Asian countries (present members: China, India, Japan, Korea and Malaysia).
