Session Title Exploration for magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits
Main Convener Dr. Balaram Vysetti (National Geophysical Research Institute, India)
Co-convener(s) Dr. S Nirmal Charan (National Geophysical Research Institute, India)
Dr. D Venkata Subba Rao (National Geophysical Research Institute, India)
Session Description Platinum group elements (PGE: Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) are assuming an increasingly important role in modern industrial society and are currently receiving world-wide attention as an attractive exploration target. Current PGE production is dominated by South Africa, Russia, USA and Canada. Not much progress has been made by the Asian countries, except China. Consorted efforts should be made to exchange the knowledge on PGE exploration techniques among the geoscientific community of the different nations especially from Asian countries, which will result in improving our understanding of the Earth's processes for the formation of major PGE deposits in varied geodynamic settings. AOGS 2008 will provide an attractive locale to discuss various issues related to exploration and exploitation of magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits in Asian countries.
