Session Title The Current State of Knowledge of Tsunami Hazard in the Indian and Pacific Oceans
Main Convener Prof. Phil Cummins (Geoscience Australia, Australia)
Co-convener(s) Dr. CP Rajendran (Indian Institute of Science, India)
Session Description The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and Indian Ocean Tsunami not only exposed a wide gap in our understanding of tsunami hazard, it also shook the confidence of many earth scientists in their ability to understand what controls the size of tsunamigenic earthquakes. Since 2004, new paleotsunami studies, re-analyses of historical data, and the occurrence of additional tsunamis have added considerably to our meagre base of knowledge on tsunami sources in this part of the world. Also, much effort has been put into developing new modelling tools, hazard assessments, and inundation maps for tsunami-prone areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. With all this new work, has our confidence improved? Is a consistent picture emerging of the tsunami threat? What are we missing? This session is intended to provide an opportunity for scientists working in this field to take stock of what progress has been made in our understanding of tsunami hazard, and assess where to go from here.
