Session Title Monitoring and Remediation of Surface and Groundwater Contamination Due to Natural and Anthropogenic Sources
Main Convener Dr. Mohammed Rafi Sayyed (Poona College,, India)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Namdeo Pawar (Department of Geology, University of Pune, Pune, India)
Session Description Today the world, in many parts, is experiencing the decline in potable water resources and the vulnerable environment increase the risk of extreme events due to population growth, agriculture practices, industrialization and urbanization. At the same time natural processes like earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, cyclones, dissolution of minerals etc. also pose a threat of the surface and groundwater contamination. It is predicted that the water systems in the future will be quite dependent on the changing climate conditions as well as the whole spectrum of human activities. This situation demands an understanding of the natural variation of water quality and the role of human in water pollution. This session will highlight the recent developments in the research pertaining to different geochemical aspects of surface and groundwater pollution, the pathways of water contamination, geochemical tools for environmental monitoring for water and remedial measures for sustainable water recourses management.
