Session Title | The Microbial Processes in the Changing Ocean Biogeochemistry |
Main Convener | Dr. Fuh-Kwo Shiah (Academy Sinica, Taiwan) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Ramaiah Nagappa (National Institute of Oceanography, India) |
Session Description | The microbial processes play important roles in the marine biogeochemical cycle, ranging from regenerated production in the upper water column to degradation of fresh biogenic materials of sinking particles as well as recalcitrant organic matter in the twilight zone of the water column. Meanwhile, the microbial processes also incarnate in structure and function of microbial web, including autotrophic and heterotrophic processes, and the roles in the marine biogeochemical cycles. As the ocean is experiencing changes in the external forcing, such as global warming, acidification due to increasing atmospheric CO2, increasing river discharges of nutrients and organic matter, etc., it is foreseeable that ocean biogeochemical cycle will also undergo changes. It is critical to better understand the microbial processes in order to predict future changes in ocean biogeochemistry. This session accepts contributions on any aspects of microbial processes in the marine biogeochemical cycle; especially welcome are contributions related to the changing ocean biogeochemistry. |
