Session Title | Natural Hazards - Processes, Impacts and Adaptation |
Main Convener | Dr. James Terry (National University of Singapore, Singapore) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Giulio Iovine (CNR-IRPI, Italy) |
Session Description | It is difficult to think of a more pressing concern for our Asia-Pacific region, and indeed our planet, than the increasing toll that natural hazards take on individuals and society in general. Often human activities interact with existing environmental problems (such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, land degradation) to exacerbate the risks associated with potentially hazardous areas. This session intends to cover all types of natural hazards, including tropical cyclones, river floods, drought, wildfire, storm surges, rapid mass movements, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami. Papers are encouraged that focus on specific natural hazard origins, distribution and processes, or that describe links with climatic and/or environmental change. Research that presents findings from fieldwork based investigation (rather than simulation or modelling approaches) is especially welcome. Similarly, studies that address hazard vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategies (practice rather than theory) for the AOGS region should be submitted. |
