Session Title Scientific findings and observations for the polar regions (IPY) from satellites missions including Formosat-2 and Formosat-3
Main Convener Prof. Yuei-An Liou (National Central University, Taiwan)
Co-convener(s)
Session Description Polar regions that have profound significance on the Earth’s climate, environments, ecosystems, and societies are remarkably ignorant in many aspects. The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 was initiated to advance our understanding of how polar climate operates and its interaction with polar environment, ecosystems, and societies, and how it interacts with and influences the oceans, atmosphere, and land masses. Although the understanding of polar climate is a crucial issue, it is extremely difficult to conduct research in polar regions due to the problems associated with transportation, extreme weather, and seasonal cycle, etc. Remote sensing by satellites, such as Formosat-2 and Formosat-3, becomes an extremely important technique to assess the environment of the polar regions.
The main objectives of this special session are:
• To use the space mission observations to assess the polar ice dynamics, such as Arctic ice extent, Antarctic ice shelf disintegration, and ice mass in relation to the global climate change;
• To use the space mission observations to study the atmospheric and ionospheric properties in the polar regions for a better understanding of their changes in relation to the global climate change;
• To present scientific findings and observations from field campaigns in the polar regions;
