Session Description | The physical processes responsible for the transport of the solar wind mass, energy, and momentum into the Earth's magnetosphere remain a prime area of interest in magnetospheric physics. This session will provide a forum for discussion on a broad range of topics which are central to the understanding of the physics of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, including: spatial and temporal properties of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause; formation as well as temporal & spatial characteristics of the cusp and boundary layers; input of the wave-particle interaction and large scale Kelvin-Helmholtz waves into the energy flow from the solar wind into the magnetosphere; morphology and characteristics of the field-aligned current systems; mechanisms responsible for saturation of the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling during extreme external conditions; and ionospheric response, including heavy ion outflow, and it's role in the system dynamics. Papers on all aspects (observations, data analysis methods, modelling and theory) are welcome. This session aims to summarise recent results and to discuss future directions. |
