Session Title AMY2 - Variability
Main Convener Prof. Kyung-Ja Ha (Pusan National University, Korea, South)
Co-convener(s) Dr. BN Goswami (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, India)
Prof. Jun Matsumoto (Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan)
Session Description The international program of Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) is a new cross-cutting initiative between GEWEX and CLIVAR and a coordinated observation and modeling effort under the leadership of WCRP. The long-term goal of AMY is to integrate the ongoing and planned national projects in Asian countries and other international research programs and activities so as to improve understanding of Asian monsoon system variability and predictability and to enhance monsoon prediction capacity for societal benefits as well as for additional benefit of each participating project.
It is well known that the variability of the Asian monsoon rainfall has a large impact on the agricultural production and water resources, and hence the economy of the world. Currently there is an increasing need to predict the intraseasonal, seasonal, and interannual aspects of monsoon precipitation under the global warming. The goals of the session are to understand variabilities of Asian monsoon at various time-scales and their linkages with regional and global climate, and to investigate impacts of ocean-land-atmosphere interaction on the evolution of Asian monsoon system.
