Session Title Variability of the Equatorial and Low Latitude Ionosphere and Thermosphere
Main Convener Prof. Archana Bhattacharyya (Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, India)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Mangalathayil Ali Abdu (INPE, Brazil)
Dr. Jonathan Makela (University of Illinois, United States)
Dr. Amit Patra (National Atmospheric Research Laboratory, India)
Session Description The equatorial and low latitude ionosphere and thermosphere show large degree of variability in response to forcing from below in the form of tides, gravity waves and planetary waves, and also to magnetospheric forcing. Quantifying these variations using data from in situ observations and
ground-based radio and optical techniques, and modeling them continue to pose a challenge. In recent times, changes in the equatorial ionosphere that are associated with sudden stratospheric warming events have been reported. Longitudinal patterns in variations of the low latitude ionosphere and thermosphere have also been the subject of several studies in recent years. In this session, papers related to all aspects of the variability of the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere and thermosphere, on large and small spatial scales and different time scales, are welcome.
