Session Description Historical earthquake studies such as collection of historical earthquake data from archives, establishment of seismic intensity scales, compilation of historical earthquake catalogues have been done in Asian countries, which have wealthy ancient culture, and have experienced several earthquake disasters. However, still there are several countries which are under the threat of earthquake hazard but do not have complete data/documents. Paleoseismology studies have helped the scientific community to identify the historical and pre-historical earthquakes signature preserved in geological records, having manifestations either on the earth's surface or in the sediment successions. For identification of older paleo-earthquakes geological methods such as trenching surveys across active faults, identifications of liquefaction features, and searching for evidences of such catastrophic events at archaeological sites or tsunami deposits in coastal environments have been carried out in some countries.
These studies not only provides the information of behaviour of fault segments, pattern of deformation, recurrence interval but also are useful for long- and mid-term earthquake forecasts, including the probabilistic earthquake forecasting.
