Session Title Tropical Indian Ocean: Recent Advances from Observations and Models
Main Convener Dr. Murty Vadlamani (National Institute of Oceanography Regional Centre, India)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Jerome Vialard (IRD, France)
Dr. Weidong Yu (First Institute of Oceanography, SOA, China)
Dr. Ravichandran M (Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, India)
Session Description A decade ago, the tropical Indian Ocean was still poorly routinely observed in comparison to the Tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Over the last decade, there has been a quick development of the Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS), and its multiple components (satellites, in situ observations). The in situ observations include in particular the quick growth of the Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA) and of the Argo system. Those inflow of new observations have provided unprecedented grounds to advance understanding of the tropical Indian Ocean dynamics, and have motivated the scientific community to address new scientific questions.

In order to review the recent multi-facial progresses in observing and understanding the tropical Indian Ocean, we invite talks about studies of the tropical Indian Ocean, using either recent observations or numerical models.More specifically, the themes of this session include:

i) understanding of tropical Indian Ocean interannual, seasonal and intraseasonal variability,
ii) air-sea interactions,
iii) dynamics of oceanic response to tropical cyclones,
iv) validation of tropical Indian Ocean model or essential datasets (e.g. new satellite or re-analysis products).
