Session Title Extreme Weather Events in the changing Climate
Main Convener Prof. Sushil Kumar Dash (Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Jai-Ho OH (Pukyong National university, Korea, South)
Dr. Ashok Priyadarshan Dimri (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India)
Session Description There is now world-wide concern about anthropogenic climate change. At the same time, recent occurrences of extreme weather events and their unusual intensities and durations are matter of concern for scientists and society. Thus climate change and weather extremes are high-priority and strategic issues. Substantive research has already been undertaken and provides the starting point for further development by researchers. The proposed session will include the broad topics such as Temperature extremes – heat waves and cold waves; Rainfall extremes – intense rainfall, drought, intra- and inter-monsoon variability; Cyclones, wind storms and snow storms and other events, e.g., fog.

This session will provide an opportunity to brainstorm on the scientific aspects and impacts of climate change on extreme weather conditions around the world, such as:
• Definition of extreme events – frequency, persistence and magnitude; spatial and temporal scales; impacts
• Statistical techniques for the analysis of extremes
• Detection and attribution of trends in extremes
• Causes of extreme events – links with circulation and physical processes
• Assessment of the ability of climate models to simulate extremes and their causes
• Dynamical and statistical downscaling of extreme events
• Future projections of changes in extreme events and uncertainties in these projections
