| Session Description | It is difficult to think of a more pressing concern for our Asia-Pacific region, and indeed our planet, than the increasing toll which natural hazards take on both individuals and society. Recent disasters such as the typhoons striking The Philippines, the extensive Pakistan floods, and the Indonesian tsunami all exemplify the calamitous impacts caused by different types of hazard events. Often, it is the interaction of human activities with existing challenges posed by environmental change that exacerbates the risks associated with potentially hazardous areas. The aim of this session is to present recent findings across a broad range of natural hazard types, including earthquakes, tsunami, landslides, volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones (typhoons), river floods, storm surges, drought and wildfire. Implications of these findings will be explored through discussion. Papers are therefore encouraged that focus on natural hazard genesis, mechanisms and physical processes, spatial patterns, field observations and measurement. Similarly, research that addresses vulnerability assessment, hazard mapping, or which discuses modern adaptation strategies for the AOGS region is especially welcome for submission. |
