Session Title River Basin Management Tackling Climate Change
Main Convener Prof. Akira Mano (Tohoku University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Seiki Kawagoe (Fukushima University, Japan)
Session Description Understanding the climate change impact on river system management is one of the biggest and most immediate challenges facing river administrators around the world. The overall objective of the proposed session is hence to examine how the river basin should be managed in the face of climate change. This is important because river administrators are still unsure how to incorporate climate change in river basin management. More specifically, the proposed session will address the following main questions:
• What are the pressures facing water resources and river basin management under changing climate conditions and how do we assess the relative importance of these pressures and the associated degree of uncertainty?
• How to predict accurately changes in water resources for the river basin scale and the water environment caused by climate variability and change?
• How to determine the best river basin management strategies, adaptation measures, and vulnerability assessment procedures that can cope with climate change and other physical, socio-economic and institutional constraints?

This session will provide a forum to share the latest developments in the modeling approaches and practical experiences in dealing with the assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation measures in river basin management. The topics to be addressed will include:
• Impacts of climate change on water resources change in temperate and tropical climate zone.
• Impacts on snow and glacier ice.
• Modeling of sediment and contaminant transport under changing climate condition.
• Risk management for flood and landslide disasters.
• Environment in Reservoir, Lake and Wetland
• Integrated water resource management
• Policy and decision making for the river basin scale tackling climate change.

The authors of this session are invited to apply the post-conference publication of the special issue from SCI Journal TAO, Terrestrial, Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences published by the Chinese Geoscience Union in Taiwan. The title of SI is "Impacts and Adaptation of Climate Change on Watershed Management and Hydrology".
