Co-convener(s) Dr. Haibing Li (Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, China)
Dr. Changrong He (China Earthquake Administration, China)
Dr. Bunichiro Shibazaki (International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, Japan)
Prof. Jin-Han Ree (Korea University, Korea, South)
Prof. Kuo-Fong Ma (Institute of Geophysics, National Central University, Taiwan)
Session Description Faulting induced major earthquake is the most unpredictable and devastated natural hazards. There were several large earthquakes occurred in east Asia, which included 1995 Kobe earthquake of Japan, 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake of Taiwan, and 2008 Wenchuan earthquake of China in last two decades. They caused huge damages in property and many casualties. To better understand the earthquake faulting mechanism and energy partitioning in large earthquakes, drilling projects on the major fault zones have been carried out after the earthquake events mentioned above. This session focuses on integrating the expertise from various disciplines, including geophysics, geology, petrology, rock mechanics as well as modeling, and aims at better understanding the fault system related to the earthquake.
