Session Title The Taiwan – Philippine Geodynamics
Main Convener Prof. Po-Fei Chen (National Central University, Taiwan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Teresito Bacolcol (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Philippines)
Dr. Wen-Tzong Liang (Academia Sinica, Taiwan)
Session Description Taiwan and Philippines, being proximal to each other, share almost the same geodynamic setting. Both, connected by the east-dipping subduction along the Malina trench, sit atop the convergent boundary between the Eurasia Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The collision of the two plates has drawn many similar tectonic characteristics in both Taiwan and Philippines, such as reversal of subduction polarity, frequent devastating earthquakes, and active orogenic processes. However, the volcanic activities are relatively quiescent in Taiwan, perhaps as a result of using up oceanic lithosphere. This session invites studies on the Taiwan – Philippine geodynamics. All geophysical, geochemical, and geological approaches to tackle related themes are welcome to contribute to this session.
