Session Description | The Joint US-Taiwan TAIGER project has conducted multi-disciplinary, land and marine geophysical imaging experiments successfully from 2006-2009. The results provide constraints for tectonic modeling of Taiwan, one of the youngest and most active orogenies in the world. Coupled with recent geological, geodetic and other geophysical research advances in Taiwan, the TAIGER results contribute constraints for answers to fundamental questions regarding the arc-continent collision that created Taiwan and orogenic processes as a whole. In this special session we would like to solicit papers on the analysis of new results and their interpretations. At the same time, for the understanding of Taiwan and the collision processes as well as the comparisons to other well-studied orogenies are important. Thus, we would like to solicit papers on the active and inactive mountains of East Asia and elsewhere based on structural geology, orogeny-related metamorphism, thermo-chronology, surficial processes, geophysical imaging and geodynamic modeling. Associated with his session will be a half-day sea cruise to visit the active volcano and seismic zone, the Turtle Island, offshore of NE Taiwan. Suggested Conveners: C.S.
