Session Title Precipitation Science and Application of Satellite Data in Asia

Session Description Weather and climate in Asia is strongly affected by monsoon. Precipitation data are essential for understanding the Asian monsoon. Precipitation data derived from satellite have been accumulated for more than 20 years. Especially, the TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite, which was launched in 1997, has given us the climatological data on the three dimensional structure of precipitation systems and pioneered a new research discipline called precipitation system climatology. Seasonal change, diurnal cycle of precipitation, and their difference region by region etc., have been known by analyzing TRMM data.

Global precipitation map products have been developed using multi-satellite and microwave sensors. Near real-time rainfall map products based on, for example, the GSMaP (Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation) project are provided and can be operationally used for weather forecast, flood warning, river control, etc.

In this background, the future satellite project called GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) is scheduled for launch in 2013.

Satellite derived precipitation data still have estimation errors depending on season and/or region. To obtain more accurate satellite data, it is desirable that satellite data will be compared with ground observation data in different conditions for validation.

Thus in this session, we would like to discuss:
1. new knowledge on precipitation systems obtained from satellite data
2. ground validation of satellite precipitation data
3. applications of satellite precipitation data in Asia.
