Session Title | Land-ocean Interaction: Surface Estuaries vs. Subterranean Estuaries |
Main Convener | |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Guizhi Wang (Xiamen University, China) Dr. Matt Charette (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, United States) |
Session Description | Estuaries have been long recognized as an important regime of the land-ocean interactions. The term “subterranean estuaries” (STE) have only been framed recently, but dramatically increasing numbers of studies have proved that STE is also another important domain of land-ocean interactions. While both systems share similarities in terms of mixing between seawater and freshwater and associated biogeochemical reactions therein, there are significant differences in between which are yet to be better contrasted and compared. This session calls for contributions related to all aspects of physical, chemical, and biological processes in both surface and subterranean estuaries. Studies related to the interactions between these two estuarine systems, and effects of their export fluxes on coastal ecosystems are also welcome. Both case studies and comparative studies on the two estuarine systems are appreciated. |
