Session Title | Weather, Climate and Food Security (WeatCliFS) |
Main Convener | Dr. Tom Beer (Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, Australia) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. James Terry (National University of Singapore, Singapore) |
Session Description | This session primarily addresses the priority topic: Science and Technology for Sustainable Development. It particularly focuses on the connections between weather, climate and food security that investigate, inter alia, issues such as water, health and agriculture. It also links environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainable development in relation to the nexus between rainfall deficiency, drought, food production decline, food scarcity and famine. Through oral presentation, posters and panel discussions, the goals of the session are : - To improve understanding of the linkages between weather, climate (both climate variability and climate change) and food security, concentrating particularly on the transition when the weather and climate induce a disastrous situation; - To hear from studies on prediction of extreme meteorological events that lead to food scarcity and thus to reduce predictive uncertainty; - To disseminate knowledge and data on weather, climate and food security for the advancement of research and education in general, especially where relevant for developing countries; - To seek solutions for the increased vulnerability and decreased resilience to extreme weather-related risks, in particular for local farming communities in developing and emerging countries. - To establish links and networks with those international organizations involved in research on weather, on climate, on disaster research, on food, and agriculture and their socio-economic interactions. |
