Session Title | Subduction Zone Geohazards from Volcanism to Tsunamis: Rates, Monitoring, Mitigation |
Main Convener | Prof. James Goff (University of New South Wales, Australia) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Hamish Campbell (GNS Science, New Zealand) |
Session Description | This session is named in honour of Xavier Le Pichon who suggested that an international effort should be made for global geophysical monitoring of subduction zones. The scope of this session is therefore to discuss current knowledge and research relating to active subduction zones globally, especially in the Pacific and Indian Oceans but also in the Mediterranean Sea. Prompted by the Tohoku-oki Tsunami of March 2011, it is timely to consider unified international surveillance of active subduction zones. Knowledge of the nature, magnitude and frequency of subduction-related processes is necessary. Contributions that relate to specific subduction zones are welcome. This session will appeal to all earth scientists and also social scientists concerned with planning and mitigation of natural hazards. |
