Session Description | The Asian winter monsoon (AWM) is an active component in the global climate system. The AWM dominates the Asian winter circulation and exerts strong influences on not only the local weather conditions but also the climate over remote regions such as North America and Australia through changing the position of Maritime Continent heat source- the most important planetary scale heat source in boreal winter- and their associated teleconnections. The AWM also favors strong interactions between tropical and extratropical regions due to its large meridional scale. Recently, the AWM has attracted much interest of scholars due to the large hydro-meteorological hazards and weather extremes it has caused, and has posed public concern especially because of the potential for the monsoon changes under anthropogenically forced warmed climate. This session aims to include the recent understanding and advances in important aspects of the AWM studies including the variability, mechanism, modeling, predictability, projection. Timescales of interest range from synoptic through to intraseasonal, interannual, interdecadal and climate change. Presentations that are related to these aspects are all welcome, as are those related to the climatic impacts of the AWM. We hope that this session will provide an opportunity for discussions and exchanges of ideas, and facilitate possible further collaboration to promote the AWM studies in Asia, Oceania and worldwide. |
