Session Title Quantitative Evaluation Methods for Meteorological Forecasts and Geophysical Products
Main Convener Dr. Elizabeth Ebert (Bureau of Meteorology, Australia)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Tieh-Yong Koh (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)
Session Description Verifying the accuracy of predictions, model simulations, and other geophysical products such as remotely sensed fields, is important to inform users of their quality and guide improvements to those products. While simple metrics like bias and root mean square error continue to be widely used, many diagnostic verification methods have recently been developed to better characterize the nature and sources of error. Spatial forecast verification, and methods for evaluating forecast extremes, are two active areas of research. Led largely by the atmospheric science community, these methods are applicable to many fields within the geosciences. (For a non-exhaustive list of examples, please see http://www.cawcr.gov.au/projects/verification/)

This transdisciplinary session will demonstrate methods for quantitative evaluation of forecasts and geophysical products. Contributions are invited from all areas of the geosciences.
