Session Title Variability of Tropospheric Trace Gases and Aerosols: Observations, Modeling, and Forecasts
Main Convener Dr. King-Fai Li (California Institute of Technology, United States)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Baijun Tian (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, United States)
Session Description Monitoring and forecasting air quality and its change has important societal impacts and has been a fast-growing field since global observations of tropospheric trace gases and aerosols became available in the last decade. Observed spatiotemporal variability of these tropospheric trace gasses and aerosols are useful for diagnosing the shortcomings of current chemistry–transport models and improving our prediction skill of the air quality using these models. Presentations in this session will be concerned with, but not limited to, variability of trace gases and aerosols in the troposphere on various spatiotemporal scales ranging from daily to interannual and from regional to global. Relevant processes may include tropical convection, monsoons, the Madden–Julian oscillation, El Niño/Southern Oscillation, planetary wave propagations, tropics–extratropics exchange, stratosphere–troposphere exchange, as well as climate extremes such as hurricanes. Results from satellite and ground-based observations, chemistry–transport model simulations, skill improvements in air quality forecast models are all welcome.
