Session Title | Environmental and Ecosystem Changes of Western Pacific Marginal Seas: Processes, Records and Mechanisms |
Main Convener | Prof. Meixun Zhao (Ocean University of China, China) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Guodong Jia (Guangzhou Institute of geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China) Dr. Jianfang Chen (Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, China) |
Session Description | Marginal sea environments are under increasing pressure due to both natural and anthropogenic forcing. Sea surface temperature increases, ocean acidification, nutrient loading, hypoxia, and land hydrological projects are all affecting marginal ecosystem fundamentally. However, it is still a challenge to quantitatively separate and link the various forcing mechanisms on marginal sea ecosystem. This session aims to bring together oceanographers, marine biogeochemists, ecologists and climate scientists, to assess the current status of marginal sea environmental changes and ecosystem responses; and to distinguish natural variability and anthropogenic forcing mechanisms on ecosystem changes, by synthesis of results from field survey of modern processes, proxy records extending back to the preindustrial periods, and modeling.
