Session Description | Recent rapid economic development of Asian countries significantly affects the environmental conditions from the land to the coastal waters. Located in the eastern part of Asia, the East and South China Seas, the Yellow Sea, the Japan/East Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea are the major marginal seas of the Pacific Ocean. These marginal seas undergo strong influences both from the land through processes such as river runoff and atmospheric deposition and from the Pacific through ocean-shelf processes. Consequently, the East Asian marginal seas become highly dynamic transition zones, resulting in diverse spatiotemporal chemical and biological changes. However, the role of these marginal seas as a linkage between the land and the Pacific Ocean has still not been well understood due to the complexity of the associated physical, chemical and biological processes. This session intends to bring together not only chemical, biological and physical oceanographers, but also onshore geochemists and hydrologists in order to better understand the East Asian marginal seas interacting between the land and the ocean. |
