Session Title Water-rock Interactions -Ore deposits and the Environment
Main Convener Dr. Tsubasa Otake (Hokkaido University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Carlo Arcilla (University of the Philippines, Diliman, Philippines)
Dr. Kenzo Sanematsu (Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan)
Session Description Water-rock interactions often play a key role in concentrating economic and/or hazardous elements on the Earth’s surface. At elevated temperatures, different varieties of water-rock interactions create various types of geothermal systems and hydrothermal ore deposits. At lower temperatures, important water-rock interactions include weathering to form laterite deposits, the generation of acid mine drainage, the contamination of groundwater, and the retention of toxic elements in soils. We will discuss various approaches (e.g., field-based study, laboratory experimentation, and theoretical modeling) that will increase our understanding of the processes involved in ore deposit formation, as well as the associated environmental issues.
