Session Title Computational Advances and Applications in Mineral Physics
Main Convener Prof. Taku Tsuchiya (Ehime University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Bijaya Karki (Louisiana State University, United States)
Prof. Tao Sun (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China)
Session Description Theoretical and computational mineral research plays an important role in modern geophysics and geochemistry to advance our knowledge of Earth and planetary interiors. Various computational techniques, which range from first-principles to empirical, from static calculations to molecular dynamics, from atomistic to multi-scale models, etc. have now become standard to study physical/chemical properties of minerals. As in the US and European regions, the community should be expanded also in Asia and Oceania.
This session will bring together latest computational contributions covering traditional topics of structure, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, elasticity, defects, etc. and also more advanced challenges on deformation, diffusion, conductivity, melting, mixing, viscosity, etc. Abstracts related not only to geophysical applications but also to fundamental theories and computational techniques are welcome.
