Session Title Dynamics, Kinematics and History of the Philippine Sea Plate
Main Convener Prof. Timothy Byrne (University of Connecticut, United States)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Gaku Kimura (The University of Tokyo, Japan)
Dr. Jonny Wu (National Taiwan University, Taiwan)
Session Description The Philippine Sea plate is a large marginal basin sandwiched between the much larger Eurasia, Pacific and Indo-Australia plates. The plate is nearly completely surrounded by convergent plate boundaries and includes some of the most active tectonic environments on Earth. Consequently the plate has been the site of numerous natural disasters and catastrophes since historic times. The last few decades have also yielded a wide range of new observations from the plate margins and interior (e.g., GPS, seismology and geology from Japan, Taiwan, Philippines as well as regional-scale tomographic data) that have important implications for understanding the dynamics of plate interactions along the plate boundary. Here we seek oral and poster presentations that bear on the geologic history and geophysical character of the plate and that can be integrated into a more holistic view of this dynamic environment.
