Session Title Current Consensus on Deep Earth Dynamics
Main Convener Dr. Takashi Nakagawa (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Eh Tan (Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taiwan)

Prof. John Hernlund (Earth-Life Science Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan)
Session Description Description: Following recent observations, experiments and numerical modeling, we have been able to assess a variety of complicated phenomena from crust to core. However, there are still unresolved issues on structure, dynamics and evolution in the deep Earth such as the origin and length-scale of large-scale lateral heterogeneity, on surface dynamics such as the mechanism of plate tectonics, on seismic structures in the inner and outermost core, and on the origin of various geomagnetic features. Furthermore, difficulties remain in connecting all available results from seismology, mineral physics and geodynamics. Solving these issues requires technical and theoretical discussions, which we hope to trigger during this session. We would like to invite contributions from all fields related to deep Earth geophysics and geochemistry in order to catalyze new ideas and constraints.
